AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Gas prices are continuing to rise rapidly across the Austin-San Marcos metro area, with prices at highs not seen since July 2008 in this week's AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in the Austin-San Marcos metro area Thursday morning surged to $3.98 a gallon, a 10-cent increase from Wednesday and 61 cents higher than this time last week. The average is $1.47 higher than this time a year ago.
Across the state, drivers are paying an average of $4.00 per gallon, which is also a new record high. The statewide average is up 62 cents on the week and $1.45 on the year.
Drivers in El Paso are seeing the state's highest prices this week, paying an average of $4.19 per gallon, while Amarillo is paying the least at $3.74 a gallon. Midland and the DFW metroplex are tied for the second-highest average, at $4.07 a gallon.
"Gas prices are climbing at a weekly pace we’ve never seen before, breaking records that set in 2008 across the state," said AAA Texas' spokesperson Daniel Armbruster. "Prices are anticipated to keep rising due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the impact it’s causing on crude oil prices."
