AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Prices at the pump continue their rise as refineries continue to recover from February's winter storms, according to the latest AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel across the Austin metro area is $2.44 this week, up eight cents from last week and some 31 cents higher than this time a year ago.
Across the state, Texas drivers are paying an average of $2.47 a gallon, which is seven cents higher than last week and 37 cents higher than a year ago - the third lowest average in the country.
Nationwide, drivers are paying an average of $2.74 a gallon, up six cents this week and 32 cents higher than a year ago.
Drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $2.73 a gallon, while San Antonio drivers are paying the least at $2.40.
The statewide average is at its highest mark since August 2019, with analysts expecting prices to continue to rise. AAA forecasts call for the national average to hit $2.80 in March.
Analysts say that motorists can expect continued increases of at least 5–10 cents in local markets until refinery operations are stable.
EIA data indicates that retail demand for gasoline rose last week, although demand levels still remain below those of a year ago.
"March could bring the highest pump prices this year, barring any issues during Hurricane season," AAA Texas' Daniel Armbruster said. "While the month is roaring in like a lion, by the end of it we could see some relief at the pump as refineries resume normal operations, especially if crude oil prices show signs of stability."
