AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Texas Republican Congressman Michael McCaul announced on Sunday he will not run for re-election in 2026, ending a career that has spanned more than two decades.

First elected in 2004, McCaul is currently serving his 11th term and has chaired both the House Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs committees.

When asked about his decision on Sunday's "This Week" on ABC, McCaul stated he was "looking for a new challenge" but plans to continue his work in national security and foreign policy.

"It's been an honor to serve... make America stronger and the world safer," McCaul said.

The announcement comes after Texas Republicans redrew the state's congressional maps, slightly changing McCaul's district, which represents parts of Austin and the Houston suburbs.

Despite this, the district remains a Republican stronghold; McCaul won his 2024 reelection by nearly 30 points.
