SAN MARCOS, Texas (Talk1370.com) -- A Hays County grand jury has indicted a now-former corrections officer involved in the deadly shooting of a man at a Kyle hospital in December 2022.
According to the Hays County District Attorney's office, the grand jury indicted 27-year old Isaiah Garcia on a felony charge of deadly conduct in the deadly shooting of Joshua Wright.
At the time of the shooting, Wright was an inmate being held on pre-trial detention for alleged unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. While receiving medical attention at Ascension Seton Kyle, Wright allegedly assaulted the corrections officer and attempted to flee the hospital.
Garcia fired at Wright, striking him. An independent autopsy report shows Wright was shot several times in the back while he was wearing shackles; body camera video in the case has not yet been released.
Despite receiving medical attention, Wright later died from his injuries.
According to a statement from Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler released Friday morning, Garcia is no longer employed by the Sheriff's office.
"While the Hays County Sheriff’s Office strongly supports our deputies and corrections officers and the duties," said Cutler, "many of which put their safety at risk, that they must carry out on a daily basis, we also respect and honor the criminal justice process, including yesterday’s decision by the Grand Jury to move forward with charges in this case."
