AUSTIN, Texas — As the colder months approach, the Junior League of Austin is gearing up its volunteer force to address critical local needs through signature charitable programs and its largest annual holiday event.
Representatives from the civic group highlighted the organization's widespread local footprint during an appearance on Inside Austin with host Brian Fitzgerald, describing efforts that span youth hunger, essential winter clothing, and community grantmaking.
With approximately 2,300 members, the Junior League of Austin is the largest women’s organization in the Austin area and ranks as the fourth-largest Junior League chapter worldwide, according to President Sarah Gutierrez. Over the course of the year, its members contribute more than 160,000 volunteer hours and partner with 23 local nonprofit agencies, granting upwards of $100,000 to partner programs.
"The Junior League of Austin is an organization of women whose mission is to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training," Gutierrez said. "You watch women come in, learn new skills, and then they go lead all over Austin."
Beyond granting funds, the group operates internal signature initiatives such as FIT: Food in Tummies, a volunteer-run weekend backpack nutrition program serving Del Valle Independent School District, and KICS: Kids in Cool Shoes, which supplies footwear to students across local school districts.
The organization is also preparing for the 40th anniversary of its Coats for Kids program, an initiative that provides warm winter clothing to Central Texas children. Emily Collins, chair of the program, stated that the organization has distributed more than 1 million coats over the initiative's four decades.
"It's just so fun to see a request of a certain type of coat from a student and then our volunteers are able to go shop for that specific coat," Collins said. "It really just brings you a lot of joy to find a really cute little coat that you know will keep them warm when they need it."
Donations of new and gently used coats will be accepted beginning Nov. 9 at Jack Brown Cleaners locations throughout Central Texas, where items will be cleaned before delivery to the Junior League headquarters for sorting and distribution. Community members can also purchase coats through an online registry or provide monetary support, with a $20 donation covering the purchase of a new coat.
The group's winter philanthropic operations are powered in large part by A Christmas Affair, its flagship annual fundraiser, which is entering its 51st year. The event will feature a holiday market of roughly 230 merchants and a calendar of special gatherings themed "Season of Light," according to event chair Jennifer Kalinowski.
"At our core, we are a holiday market where anyone can shop and purchase anything they would like," Kalinowski said. "Everything that folks will experience will really be a celebration of hope, connection, generosity, and just kind of bring us together."
Events for A Christmas Affair begin Nov. 13 through Nov. 15 at the Junior League’s Community Impact Center with children’s festivities, a Mahjong tournament, and pet photos with Santa. The main holiday market, featuring evening galas, tree lightings, and daytime shopping passes, runs Nov. 18 through Nov. 22 at the Palmer Events Center.
Kalinowski noted that the Junior League serves as both a community lifeline and an incubator for professional growth, encouraging local women seeking connection to explore membership. Prospective members between the ages of 23 and 40 can participate in upcoming admissions meetings ahead of the new member class starting June 1, 2027.
