AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- A man is dead following an encounter late Tuesday night with Austin Police near West Anderson Lane and Wooten Park Drive.

According to APD, the incident began around 10:59 p.m. when officers responded to a report of a man armed with a gun attempting to break into businesses at the scene. Upon their arrival, officers confronted that individual and instructed him to drop his weapon.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said officers worked for several minutes to try and get the suspect to drop his weapon; ultimately, the man failed to comply, prompting officers to open fire. One officer fired a less lethal "pepper ball" at the suspect; as the man continued to disregard the officers' commands and raised his weapon, five officers opened fire.

The suspect died from his injuries on the scene. Davis said the suspect was a white male; no other identification was available.

Davis said no officers were injured in the incident.

Roads in the area, including Anderson Lane, remained closed until midday Wednesday, while investigators continued their work at the scene.

The officers who fired their weapons will be placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure for any officer-involved shooting.
