AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and injured a man in North Austin on Sunday afternoon, city officials confirmed.
The incident took place at the intersection of Anderson Square and Research Boulevard, just north of the US 183 and North Lamar interchange, just before 1 p.m.
"A person being shot on the streets of Austin by someone purporting to be law enforcement, particularly when it's ICE, is something that causes me to be unhappy and angry about it," Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said at a news conference.
The man is said to be in serious but stable condition, according to Austin-Travis County EMS chief Robert Luckritz. EMS transported the man to a nearby hospital, noting he was "alert and talking" during the ride.
Congressman Greg Casar (D-Austin) echoed Watson's comments, pointing to previous shootings across the country involving ICE agents. "There is a reason that people in Austin and across the country are deeply suspicious of anything that ICE has said," Casar said, adding that the agency's presence is actively hurting the community. "For Austin to be safe, ICE should end its surge here in our community."
The Austin Police Department was not involved in the shooting but responded to the scene to manage traffic. The police activity resulted in road closures at Anderson Square and the southbound frontage road of Research Boulevard.
