AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- One man is dead after a confrontation with Austin Police officers in north Austin Sunday night.

Police were called to the scene in the 9000 block of Northgate Boulevard, between US 183 & Rundberg Lane, around 8 p.m. Sunday. The caller reported a man threatening a woman and child with a gun inside an apartment.

When officers arrived on the scene, they tried to get the man to come out. Around 8:30, he came out on the apartment's balcony. Officers fired a "less lethal" round, after which the man went back into the apartment.

Despite SWAT being called out to the scene, officers decided to make entry into the apartment, believing the woman and child were in danger. The suspect opened fire on the officers; they returned fire, hitting the suspect.

Despite lifesaving efforts, the man was pronounced deceased. The woman and child were uninjured.

Interim APD chief Robin Henderson said the entire incident was captured on the officers' body-worn cameras. Four APD officers and one DPS trooper were involved in the incident.

The four APD officers will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of two investigations into the incident.
