AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting at a South Austin apartment complex Thursday morning, officials said.
Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said officers were called to the scene at the Tides at South Lamar apartments in the 3600 block of Menchaca Road just before 5 a.m. Thursday. A 911 caller reported that a woman was knocking on their door asking for help; that woman told officers she was being chased by a man through the complex and feared for her life.
Officers found the man a few minutes later, who appeared to have a knife in his hand. They ordered him to drop the weapon, trying to de-escalate the situation.
Chacon said the man yelled at police to shoot and kill him.
Two of the three officers deployed their Tasers in an effort to subdue the man; both of which were ineffective. As the man kept advancing towards officers, one opened fire, striking him.
Despite life saving efforts, the man was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Chacon said of the three officers involved, the one who fired his weapon has been on the force for 3.5 years. Of the officers who deployed their Tasers, one has been with APD for 13 years while the other was a probationary officer.
All three officers will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of two investigations - an internal administrative investigation, and a criminal investigation in cooperation with the Travis County District Attorney's Office.
