One person dead after fiery crash in southeast Austin

Police lights

AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- One person is dead following a fiery rear-end crash in southeast Austin early Monday morning.

Police say an SUV crashed into the back of an Amazon 18-wheeler parked on the shoulder of the westbound lanes of State Highway 71 near Montopolis Drive just after 2 a.m. Monday.

Both the SUV and the trailer burst into flames, police said. The driver of the 18-wheeler was able to walk away from the crash; the driver of the SUV was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The freeway is expected to remain closed for several hours while crews work to clear the scene and police complete their investigation. Traffic is being detoured onto the frontage road.

It's the second deadly crash on Austin roadways in nearly six hours. Sunday evening, one person was killed in a deadly crash on MoPac Expressway near Windsor Road.
