AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting Sunday afternoon in North Austin, where Austin Police officers were already on the scene of another shooting nearby.
Austin Police chief Joseph Chacon said officers were first called to the Motel 6 at 7100 North Interstate 35, near East St. John's Avenue, just before 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon on a report of shots being fired.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found what appeared to be a crime scene but said it wasn't clear if the shooting happened in a motel room, in the parking lot, or in a car. Officers located a victim, gave that person first aid, and they are now in stable condition in an area hospital.
While officers were investigating the scene and canvassing for video sources, around 4:45 p.m., two APD officers at the nearby 7-Eleven heard gunshots coming from the intersection of the IH-35 frontage road and St. John's Avenue.
As the officers approached the scene, they observed a subject who appeared to be firing a weapon into a tent. The officers began giving instructions to that individual to get onto the ground. The subject then turned and began firing at the officers, which prompted the officers to return fire.
Once the suspect went down, officers attempted to render first aid. Despite their efforts along with Austin-Travis County EMS and Austin Fire crews, the subject was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Chacon said the incident was captured on the officers' body-worn cameras, and a handgun was recovered from the scene.
Out of the two officers involved, one is a recent graduate of the 144th Cadet Academy and the other was his training officer, a 4-year veteran of APD. Both will be placed on administrative leave pending two investigations into the shooting - one by the Travis County District Attorney's office, and another by the department's internal affairs unit.
