AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- An investigation is underway after an Austin Police officer shot a man in north Austin early Saturday morning.

The incident began around 2:30 a.m. near Interstate 35 and St. John's Avenue. Officers were responding to a 911 call reporting a shooting, according to Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon.

According to witnesses, a man shot a woman. That woman was able to flee the scene in a car, but the man remained in the area on foot.

One of the officers came across a man matching the suspect's description in a nearby motel parking lot, Chacon said, and ordered him to get on the ground. The man refused to comply, and instead walked away from the officer and moving between two vehicles. At that point, the officer moved to intercept the suspect and the two men came face to face.

At this point, the officer fired shots and the suspect went down.

Officers approached the suspect and began to offer medical treatment. Chacon said he had been transported to a nearby hospital and was said to be in stable condition. A firearm was recovered from the scene, Chacon said.

The officer involved has been with the department for two and a half years, said Chacon, and will be placed on administrative duty while investigations into the shooting are completed.

Chacon said it's not yet clear if this shooting has any connection to another homicide investigation underway in northeast Austin Saturday morning, where a woman was found dead in a motel parking lot.

The incident was captured on multiple body-worn cameras, Chacon said, and investigators are seeking additional sources of video from the area. Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477.
