AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Authorities are investigating after a pursuit involving a stolen Fort Worth ambulance ended in a crash and fatal shooting nearly 200 miles south on the upper deck of Interstate 35 just north of downtown Austin.

Fort Worth Fire Department officials say the ambulance was stolen Wednesday night from Fire Station #4 on Mansfield Road. The theft triggered a multi-agency chase that tracked the driver south along I-35 into central Austin.

The pursuit ended near the 41st Street exit, where Texas Department of Public Safety vehicles boxed in the ambulance. DPS confirmed the confrontation escalated into a shooting, resulting in the suspect's death. Authorities have not yet released the suspect's identity.

Austin-Travis County EMS arrived at the scene around 7:10 a.m. and transported one adult to a local hospital with minor injuries. Officials are still working to confirm how that individual was injured.

All of the southbound mainlanes of Interstate 35 remained closed until about 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon; the upper deck finally re-opened around 4 p.m.
