AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- The Javier Ambler and Michael Ramos cases will be presented to a Travis County grand jury before the end of March, District Attorney Jose Garza said Thursday.
Garza released details on a number of cases involving potential law enforcement misconduct that are pending in the Civil Rights Unit.
In addition to the Ambler and Ramos cases, Garza said there are six additional cases involving either an officer-involved shooting or an in-custody death, the oldest of which dates back to March 2018. Garza said his office will provide an update on each of the cases every 14 days until they have all been presented to a grand jury.
The current grand jury term ends on March 30. Garza said his office will present the remaining cases in chronological order, with an expectation that a new grand jury could be empaneled in time to hear the cases beginning in June.
Garza also said investigations into the two officer-involved shootings that took place in the first few days of 2021 are ongoing. "Our community has been clear that when law enforcement officers use deadly force, prosecutors must investigate the case quickly and with transparency, to ensure that no one is above the law," Garza said.
Both of the recent officer-involved shootings will be presented to a grand jury as well, in keeping with office policy.
