AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- A record number of people are depending on the City of Austin's cold weather shelters during the ongoing arctic blast, according to an update provided by officials Tuesday morning.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, flanked by interim city manager Jesus Garza and Travis County Judge Andy Brown, said the city opened a seventh shelter Monday night, housing more than 600 people.
"It looks like the worst is behind us," Watson said.
The cold weather shelters will run at least one more night with temperatures expected to fall into the teens again by Wednesday morning. Anyone needing shelter can head to One Texas Center at 505 Barton Springs Road between 5-8 p.m.; transportation is available via CapMetro. After 8 p.m., anyone who needs transportation to a shelter can call 311 or 512-974-2000.
Travis County, city, and TxDOT crews all continue to monitor roads, though no weather-related issues were reported Tuesday morning.
After a late week warmup, with temperatures expected to reach into the 60s by Thursday afternoon, another cold front is expected to drop Central Texas back into sub-freezing temperatures by Saturday morning.
