WASHINGTON (Talk1370.com) -- Rep. Roger Williams, reacting to Russia's advances on Ukraine overnight, said the world is looking towards the United States for leadership and strength.

Williams (R-Austin) appeared live with Cardle & Woolley Thursday morning, just hours after Russia launched a wide-ranging attack in what Ukraine's government called a "full-scale war."

"What a challenging time for our country and the world right now," said Williams. "We'll hear from President Biden later today on what he plans on doing, but this is a real test for democracy. It's evident that Putin is fearful of democracy, by what he's doing, but it's a serious time and the United States is going to have to show strength."

Williams said one of the things he would do would be to open up the Keystone Pipeline. "We are buying energy from Russia, and they're bringing it over here," said Williams. "We're paying them a premium, and we're creating billionaires over there, just by not having the Keystone Pipeline available."

Asked about the mood at Fort Hood and the potential for American forces to deploy to Eastern Europe, Williams said American men and women don't need to be on the ground fighting Russia. "We don't need that; we should be giving Ukraine our weaponry, our training," said Williams. "They're a tough group of people and they know how to fight. They should not be over there to fight this war."
