ROUND ROCK, Texas (Talk1370.com) -- Round Rock Police are investigating after an active shooter prompted residents to shelter in place Saturday afternoon.

RRPD officials said the incident began around 12:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon with reports of a victim with multiple gunshot wounds in the 3500 block of Bent Tree Loop.

Within minutes of the original report, additional reports came in of a male with a black trench coat an an "AK-style rifle" being seen running across FM 3406, and a subject wearing camouflage clothing near Behrens Ranch.

Once officers responded to the scene, the male subject immediately engaged them and began firing at them. Those officers returned fire, and the subject retreated into the wood line at Camino del Verdes Place and Salorn Way.

As additional law enforcement resources responded to the scene, the subject began to fire at officers again, resulting in another gunfire exchange.

Later, officers located the subject in a dense part of the wood line. The officers used less-lethal rounds to try and solicit a response from the subject. After no response, officers determined that the subject was deceased.

Police say it's not yet clear if the subject was killed by a law enforcement round or his own weapon. He was found to be wearing body armor, officials said.

The gunshot victim in the original call was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and is in stable condition. No injuries were sustained by officers as a result of gunfire, but one Round Rock officer was transported for medical issues and is in stable condition.

“The quick actions of these officers and the other agencies that responded prevented further harm,” said Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks. “Our primary goal is to make sure our communities are safe.”

In addition to Round Rock officers, resources from the Austin Police Department, Georgetown Police Department, Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, Cedar Park Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Leander Police Department, Pflugerville Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives all responded to the scene.

The Texas Rangers, Round Rock Police Department and Williamson County District Attorney’s Office are also investigating the use of force per standard protocol, and any officers that discharged their weapons will be placed on standard administrative leave as a part of the investigation.
