San Marcos police investigating homicide of Manor ISD graduate near Texas State campus

SAN MARCOS, Texas (Talk1370.com) -- San Marcos Police are investigating an apparent homicide at a student-focused apartment complex near the Texas State University campus Sunday night.

The victim was identified Monday morning by Manor ISD officials as Lavonte "Red" Benford, who graduated from Manor HS in the spring of 2021.

San Marcos Police were called to the scene Sunday evening in the 1400 block of Craddock Avenue, at the Cottages at San Marcos apartment complex. The complex, which advertises itself as "upscale student housing", sits about a mile west of the Texas State campus.

Police say their investigation is ongoing, with investigators working to identify a suspect and continuing to interview witnesses.

Manor ISD officials released the following statement Monday morning. "Red was a student-athlete and well known for his skill and abilities in football and track. We wish our deepest condolences to his parents, siblings, family and all who loved him. Manor ISD is working closely with Travis County and the City of Manor to provide support to our community during this time of grieving and healing. A crisis team is available this week at Manor High School and Manor Senior High. We will forever cherish Red's memory at Manor ISD and will never forget his picture perfect smile."
