Officials said the spree began Saturday afternoon, with the first service calls coming in around 3:45 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Activity slowed down overnight, then picked up again Sunday morning when a man was shot in the back in southeast Austin.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the two suspects - identified as a 15-year old and a 17-year old - were taken into custody, after fleeing a traffic stop by Manor Police and the Travis County Sheriff's Office.
The 17-year old had a prior warrant for theft of a firearm from the same store where the 15-year old stole a gun on Saturday. Both of the firearms used in the shootings were stolen, according to APD.
Manor Police said around 9:30 p.m. that the third suspect was taken into custody, about 90 minutes after a shelter-in-place order in the Manor area was lifted.
At least two of the shootings happened at Austin Fire stations, Davis said, including one where firefighters were standing directly behind a fire truck that was struck by gunfire.
Davis said the suspects were stealing additional cars during the incidents, moving from a black or dark blue Hyundai, to a gold Hyundai, to a silver Mazda 4 door sedan, and finally a white Kia Optima. That Kia Optima is what Manor Police spotted the suspects in, prompting them to stop the vehicle.
APD described the two suspects as two Hispanic males in their late teens, one with medium wavy hair and the other with longer hair.
Davis said that four people had been shot at the various scenes, one with serious injuries and three others with minor injuries.
Anyone with information is asked to call APD at 512-974-5177, or Capital Area Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS.
