AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Billionaire activist George Soros is getting involved in Austin politics again, making a donation to a group aiming to defeat Proposition A on the Nov. 2 ballot.
The $500,000 transfer to Austin's Equity PAC came from the Open Society Policy Center in Washington.
During the 2020 election cycle, Soros contributed $652,000 to the Texas Justice & Public Safety PAC, a group that then spent more than $600,000 on digital media and mail advertisements in favor of Jose Garza, who defeated incumbent Margaret Moore in a July runoff for the Democratic nomination for Travis County District Attorney. Garza then defeated Republican Martin Harry with more than 69 percent of the vote.
Jonathon Soros, George's son, has also been involved in recent Austin elections. He contributed $25,000 earlier this year to a PAC that supported a charter amendment that would have moved the city to a strong mayor form of government.
The $500,000 from Soros wasn't the only big dollar cash infusion that Equity PAC recorded in the past week. The Fairness Project, a 501(c)4 organization based in Washington, also donated $200,000.
Save Austin Now, the group behind Proposition A, said the donations represent a shift in the campaign. “Massive out-of-state funding for our opponents show two things: That Austin donors won’t fund the anti-Prop A campaign and that the stakes in this effort to restore public safety to Austin could not be higher.”
“We are now going to fight twice as hard and we hope all our supporters will as well.”
Early voting for the Nov. 2 election begins on Monday, Oct. 18.
