AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- A SWAT callout in South Austin prompted a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents Thursday morning, according to Austin Police.
Police say the incident began as a mail theft call at an apartment complex in the 3800 block of South Lamar Boulevard around 3 a.m. Thursday morning. The subject fled on foot and actively resisted officers as they were taking him into custody. He was later transported to a nearby hospital, as officers believed he was under the influence of some type of narcotic.
After being treated and released, as officers were preparing to transport the suspect to the Travis County Jail, he was able to escape custody and flee towards Ben White Boulevard. He attempted to gain access to passing vehicles to further flee the area, and was eventually able to gain access to an APD patrol unit.
The suspect fled towards the 1300 block of Southport Drive and forced his way into two separate units on the premises. The man remained uncooperative, police said, before SWAT team members gained entry and took the suspect into custody.
Police say the man had multiple felony warrants out for his arrest. He'll likely face additional charges from Thursday's events, including mail theft, resisting arrest, and evading arrest.
Officials used a reverse 911 call around 9 a.m. Thursday morning to advise residents in the immediate area to shelter in place. That order was finally lifted around 1:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
