AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- A SWAT standoff in south Austin caused major traffic issues Monday morning near Interstate 35 and William Cannon, but officials said it was coming to a resolution just after 8:30 a.m. Monday morning.
Austin Police tell us a man with a machete was reported in the area and was said to be making threats, prompting the standoff, which began around 7 a.m. Monday morning. Because the man was on the overpass, that prompted the closure of the I-35 mainlanes as a precaution. Traffic across the William Cannon overpass was also being detoured around the area.
In addition to APD, Austin-Travis County EMS said it had multiple assets on scene to support the response. ATCEMS medics evaluated the man, but cleared the scene without making any transports.
Austin Police had indicated they were going to provide a briefing at 9 a.m. with more details; we're expecting another update later today.
Northbound traffic delays were stretching back to near SH 45 in Hays County, with southbound delays stretching back to Oltorf. Delays were also building with traffic trying to get on Interstate 35 from U.S. 290 in both directions.
