AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is going after the Austin Independent School District, saying the district's ongoing "Pride Week" events are a violation of state law.
"The Texas Legislature has made it clear that when it comes to sex education, parents - not school districts - are in charge," Paxton wrote in the letter sent to AISD Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Elizalde on Tuesday. The letter goes on to say that a district must obtain "written consent of the student's parent" before a student may be provided "human sexuality instruction."
"As you know, your curriculum and lesson plans deal head-on with sexual orientation and gender identity - topics that unmistakably constitute 'human sexuality instruction' governed by state law," the letter reads.
In a response posted on Twitter, Elizalde said "I want all our LGBTQIA+ students to know that we are proud of them and that we will protect them against political attacks."
Paxton's letter calls on parents to file grievances with the district and with the Texas Education Agency.
