AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Despite the potential for "armed protests" leading up to Wednesday's inauguration of President Joe Biden, the Texas State Capitol remained mostly quiet and peaceful as the transition of power happened in Washington.

The Texas Department of Public Safety last week closed the Capitol and grounds through the inauguration out of an abundance of caution.

A handful of people on both sides of the political spectrum could be seen protesting outside the Capitol grounds early Wednesday afternoon, with some supporting Biden and others protesting the inauguration.

DPS officials said additional personnel and resources had been deployed to the Capitol, and Austin Police said Tuesday that they were standing by to assist DPS as needed.

APD Assistant Chief Joe Chacon said on Tuesday that the department was not aware of any credible threats, but the department was prepared regardless.

"We are used to and really support people being able to come out, assemble and exercising their First Amendment rights to free speech, and what we want to do is create a safe space to be able to do that," Chacon said.
