AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Travis County District Attorney José Garza says he's running for a second term.
Garza announced his 2024 re-election campaign Tuesday at the Texas AFL-CIO headquarters.
"I'm running for re-election because we've seen the good we do when we listen to people, partner with the community, and defend the right of everyone to safety and justice," Garza said.
Garza won election in 2020 after defeating incumbent Margaret Moore in the Democratic primary, and defeating Republican opponent Martin Harry in the general election.
According to a campaign press release, since Garza was elected, the Travis County DA's office has increased the conviction rate for all acts of violence from 39% four years ago to 91% now. The conviction rate for aggravated assault charges has jumped from 41% to 73%, and the conviction rate for family violence crimes has risen from 43% four years ago to 87%.
Garza is a graduate of the Catholic University School of Law in Washington, D.C. His breadth of experience ranges from clerking for a federal district judge, serving as a public defender for Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid, working as counsel for a top congressional committee and the National Labor Relations Board, as well as a senior policy official at the U.S. Department of Labor, and Executive Director for the Workers Defense Project.
