AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Two members of a highway work crew were struck and killed Friday morning along an Interstate 35 frontage road in an auto-pedestrian crash in south Austin, officials said.
First responders were called to the northbound frontage road of the 4900 block of South Interstate 35 near Teri Road around 9:30 a.m. Friday morning.
According to Austin Police, a 2015 Porsche was driving northbound when the driver left the roadway and struck two workers who were installing roadway signs on a TxDOT contract. A 911 caller reported the crash, police said.
Both workers were pronounced deceased on the scene, officials said. Investigators say they were both males in their 30s.
The driver of the Porsche was pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extricated, officials said. That person was transported to St. David's South Austin Medical Center with potentially serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say speed appears to be the primary factor in the crash, based on a preliminary investigation. That investigation is ongoing to see if other factors, including intoxication, medical, or other issues, could be involved in the crash.
