AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin Police officials on Friday released body camera footage and other materials from an incident in southeast Austin earlier this month that resulted in an APD officer being shot.
The incident happened on August 6 around 9 p.m. in the 10000 block of Channel Island Drive.
Police said a neighbor called 911 around 7 p.m. to ask for a welfare check for 56-year old Dwayne Brzozowski. The neighbor said he had not seen Brzozowski in 6-8 months, and was concerned for his safety.
APD Detectives Daniel Jackson and Christopher Van Buren, who were working patrol that night and were in uniform, responded to the home at approximately 7:58 p.m.
Jackson and Van Buren inspected the front door and the residence, and noted that the home seemed in disrepair. The backyard had abnormal vegetative growth and appeared it had not been maintained in some time. The detectives sought permission from their supervisor to attempt entry into the home.
Van Buren kicked open the door, at which point Brzozowski said "What?" and moved towards the detectives with a firearm. The officers quickly retreated and moved away from the residence in opposite directions; Brzozowski came outside, ignored commands to drop the firearm, and began firing shots in the direction of both detectives.
Detective Jackson was shot during the encounter; both officers discharged their weapons during the encounter. Brzozowski went back into his residence, and SWAT was called out to the scene. He surrendered without incident just before midnight.
Brzozowski is facing two first-degree felony charges of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant, and two third-degree felony charges of Deadly Conduct.
Jackson has been with APD for nearly nine years, while Van Buren has been with the department for more than 10 years. Both detectives have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of two concurrent investigations into the incident, which are ongoing.
