A Carrollton man has been sentenced to 40 years for shooting at Allen police as they were trying to pull over a suspected drunk-driver last year.
Prosecutors say Evan Kates was driving along the same stretch of Greenville Avenue near Bethany Drive and had nothing to do with the DWI suspect the officers were pursuing.
Reports say Kates opened fire on them. So, one of the officers began chasing Kates who led a long, winding, high-speed chase through Allen and into Fairview, McKinney and finally into Melissa all the while, shooting at the officers behind him.
But Kates crashed in the town of Melissa and bailed out. But police chased him down and arrested him.
When they searched his car they found a semi-automatic pistol along with a bunch of spent shell casings littering the floor of the car on the driver's side.
At the time, Kates had been out of prison for just three months after getting paroled from an 18-year sentence for Aggravated Robbery in Denton County.
