Nearly 300 birds have been rescued after police in Grand Prairie break up a massive cockfighting ring.

According to officials, the animals included roosters, hens and chicks. Police say it appeared they were being bred for cockfighting.

Lily Yap with Grand Prairie Animal Services says while most of the birds were able to be taken to various facilities, some didn't make it.

Some birds were already dead by the time police arrived.

Two persons of interest were detained during the search, and police say charges are pending.
