Dallas County Commissioners have voted to buy three Tesla Model 3 sedans for the county's vehicle fleet.

They'll be assigned to the Dallas County Sheriff's Office or other county law enforcement agencies as part of a pilot program. The goal is to determine how well they hold up to the day-to-day demands of public safety departments. The vehicles could also be used as temporary replacements for other county-owned vehicles that are temporarily taken out of service for repairs.

Dallas County Commissioner Dr. Elba Garcia was vocal in her support of the purchase because of the environmental benefit of the all-electric cars. County Commissioner John Wiiley Price, however, voted against the deal. He wanted the County to have other options before purchasing electric vehicles.

"Hell, no," Commissioner Price said. "The problem is...the only reason I think Tesla is out there is because the others are not tested and Tesla is. Since 2012, I've been told that others are trying to get to market. I vote 'no'."
