A Tarrant County man is scheduled to be executed tonight, twelve years after the deaths of his pregnant wife, daughter and father-in-law, all of whom were killed in their sleep.

John Hummel was never tried for the death of the 5-year-old girl but he was convicted of murdering his wife and her father in 2009 by beating them with a baseball bat and then burning down the family's Kennedale home.

Testimony showed Hummel had tried to kill the family the previous night by lacing their dinner with rat poison.

Prosecutors told the jury Hummel wanted his family dead so he could have a relationship with another woman.

His execution has been stayed for 15 months because of Coronavirus restrictions.
