AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- With the impeachment trial of embattled Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton just days away, a new poll released Friday shows Texas voters have mixed feelings on the case.
The latest University of Texas/Texas Politics Project poll, conducted August 18-29 among 1200 self-declared registered voters, shows a plurality of respondents believe Paxton took actions during his tenure as attorney general that warrant removing him from office.
47% said Paxton should be removed, while 18% said no, and 35% said they didn't know or had no opinion.
The Texas House impeached Paxton in May on a 121-23 vote on 20 articles of impeachment; that trial is set to get underway Tuesday in the Texas Senate, which will decide if Paxton is permanently removed from office.
Among Republicans in the poll, those who felt Paxton should be removed from office fell to 24%, with 32% saying no and 43% said they either didn't know or had no opinion. The numbers swing the other way for independents and Democrats, where 71% of respondents said Paxton should be removed.
Paxton registered the lowest job approval rating in the poll since April 2021. Only 27% of respondents approved of the job he has done as the state's attorney general, while 46% disapproved.
31% of respondents said they had heard "a lot" in the news media about Paxton's legal troubles - a metric that held steady from the poll's June edition.
