The Texas Department of Public Safety has instituted a new design on Texas driver license and identification cards.
Effective August 18th of 2025, all new cards will include some additional security features.
"This new card design will make it even more difficult for criminals to produce counterfeit cards, and it enhances ways we can protect Texans’ identities from being stolen," said DPS Driver License Division Chief Sheri Gipson.
One noticeable change is the star in the upper right corner of the license. Instead of a gold star, it's now black. The star still signifies that the Texas ID card is compliant with the national REAL ID standards.
Cards previously issued by the DPS will remain valid until their normal expiration date.
