More than 200 Texas state troopers will have to slim down by the end of the year or they could be denied overtime and promotions.

This is all a part of the department's controversial waistline policy. The Morning News reports the policy requires men to have a waist no bigger than 40 inches while women troopers can't have a waist bigger than 35 inches.

Those who do, will have to start tracking and sharing their weight loss efforts.
Critics say the policy is arbitrary and has nothing to do with health, or even fitness.

In fact, most officers who failed the recent waistline test did pass the department's running, rowing and weight-lifting tests.

The organization that represents troopers sued in 2019 to stop the waistline policy. That lawsuit was eventually dismissed. The Department of Public Safety defends the policy saying, 'a trim midsection is necessary for officers to have a commanding presence in dealings with the public.'
