AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- The Texas House of Representatives approved legislation on Thursday that would ban transgender athletes from playing on school sports teams based on their gender identities.
House Bill 25 would require that public school athletic teams must be based on students' genders listed on their birth certificates when they are born.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas immediately responded: "The Texas House just voted to discriminate against trans kids and exclude them from playing sports as their authentic selves."
Rep. Valoree Swanson (R-Spring), the bill's author, has argued that it would protect equal participation of girls in school sports.
The bill moves on to the state Senate next.
