AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- The Westlake Chaps cruised to victory in their home opener Friday night, dismantling the San Benito Greyhounds 63-7 and improving to 2-0 ahead of a top ten matchup next week.
The Chaps jumped out early, building a 35-7 halftime lead. Cal Livengood and Justice Johnson each contributed two rushing touchdowns; quarterback Rees Wise efficiently led the offense, throwing for two touchdowns in the first half, connecting with Lawson Grimes and the game opening score for 47 yards to Chase Bowen.
“The message for this win has been one that we’ve talked about all week,” Chaps head coach Tony Salazar said postgame. “Coming to work, coming to practice to get better every single day. No matter the opponent at the end of the week, as long as we learn that we get the opportunity to play football , that we get the opportunity to practice every single week, once our kids understand that, we’ll stack on good days and become a better football team.”
San Benito's lone score came on a 71-yard touchdown run by Gabriel Covarrubias, making the score 14-7 early in the first quarter. However, the Chaps' defense quickly responded, with Brandon Clark securing his first career interception to halt the Greyhounds' momentum.
