COLLEGE STATION, Texas — In one of the most stunning early-season upsets of the SEC schedule, Kentucky silenced a crowd of more than 105,000 fans at Kyle Field on Saturday with a 31-21 victory over No. 9 Texas A&M.
The atmosphere in College Station turned grim almost immediately on the opening kickoff. Texas A&M wide receiver and return specialist Terry Bussey suffered a right leg injury after cutting awkwardly to avoid a defender. Though a fumble was initially called on the field, replay review overturned the ruling after showing Bussey's right knee was down before the ball came loose. Medical personnel assisted Bussey off the field and onto a cart, transporting him to the locker room for evaluation. Broadcast reports indicated he was unable to put any weight on his right leg, leaving his status uncertain moving forward.
The Wildcats dominated utilizing opportunistic defense and explosive passing plays to record their first win in College Station since 1952. Kentucky quarterback Kenny Minchey made his first career road start look routine, completing 14 of 18 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. The Wildcats generated five passing plays of 20 yards or more as part of a 400-yard total offensive performance. On defense, safety Jordan Castell anchored Kentucky with 13 total tackles and a crucial fourth-quarter interception that sealed the outcome.
For Texas A&M, the loss completely disrupted momentum following strong non-conference victories to open the year.Following the early loss of Bussey, the Aggies struggled to find an offensive rhythm against a resilient Kentucky unit. Reed finished with 396 passing yards, five total touchdowns, and one interception on the season entering the day, but struggled to sustain scoring drives against Kentucky's pressure.
