DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - As the Cowboys continue to go bargain shopping in free agency, it's evident the major upgrades made to the team this offseason will once again come via the NFL Draft. Dallas owns the 10th overall pick in the draft on April 29, so we wanted to check in with the guys to get their thoughts on what they would do with the pick as of today.
Shan Shariff - Cornerback. The best thing back there is Trevon Diggs, so pair them up and hope that it works. The only hope out there is that he’s the best of the worst.
RJ Choppy - Trade Down. They are more than one player away from being a true title contender. Let's get as many darts as we can.
Troy Hughes - Keep the pick and grab a cornerback. Strongest cornerback class in five years. Can’t really miss this year.
Cory Mageors - This is a third-round defense and it needs to be a first-round defense. I asked Stephen Jones last year if it would be a defensive offseason and he told us that it was their priority. Then Ceedee Lamb fell in their lap and I don’t blame them for taking the receiver. I believe now is the time to invest heavily on the defensive side of the ball. At #10, I want the best defensive player available.
Mike Bacsik - I want anything on defense. They need help on that side of the ball, so grab as many defensive players as you can.
Gavin Dawson - I think the best player available at 10 is going to be a wide receiver, so I’m picking that player and trading Amari Cooper.
Jeff Cavanaugh - Best player available at 10. If it’s a tight end, we are taking a tight end, etc. Except if it’s a QB, then we are trading down.
Bryan Broaddus - Cornerback. The Cowboys are going to look at their board and fill their biggest need.
Lucious Alexander - Cornerback is my pick, although I’d be happy with any defensive pick.
Zach Wolchuk - Cornerback makes the most sense. It’s a massive need and they will most likely have the chance to take the first one off the board. The talent just doesn’t match up at the other positions with the 10th pick in this draft class. If one of the tackles falls, I wouldn’t mind that at all. We’ve seen how successful a team can be with a dominant O-Line and there is enough concern with the long-term health of Tyron Smith to justify that pick. A trade down would be a great option as well but I prefer they hold at 10 and take a cornerback.
Eric Chiofalo - My perfect draft night scenario would be trading down in round one from the tenth spot to late teens/early twenties. Select TCU safety Trevon Moehrig, while picking up an extra second or third-rounder. I would then take a corner with that extra pick.
Mike Fisher - The Cowboys might find themselves in a unique spot at number ten. What if the nine teams ahead of them all choose offensive players? This scenario would set up the ability to pick up the top-rated defensive player, a possible choice between CB’s Surtain, Horn and Farley. In that event, Farley might be the best combination of length, size, speed and “dawg”. Let’s go Farley at 10.
Chris Arnold - "Defense, Defense, Defense!" Now's not the time to get cute. Select Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II & solve your backend of the secondary issues. He's the SEC defensive player of the year. He's 6’2 202lbs. He's the only corner from a Power 5 school with an 80 or above grade vs. the pass & vs. the run. He can do it all. He's played against the best wide receivers in the nation & that was just at Tide practice! Re-team him w his buddy Trevon Diggs & reap the rewards. Don't get cute! Surtain solves a lot. He's proven. Stop projecting upside & overthinking a sure thing!
Jared Sandler - In a perfect world, I'd love for the Cowboys to draft CB Caleb Farley if he's available at #10. Ideally, the Cowboys come away with 2-3 guys who can contribute--not just be in a uniform, but contribute--to the secondary this off-season and one way to dig in to that is through the draft. I'd be open to TE Kyle Pitts at #10 if he drops but I think the Cowboys defense is so poorly constructed and built that it makes a pick like that tough to swallow even though best player available is always the best route.
Will Chambers - Trade down for a safety. Full disclosure, I believe Kyle Pitts is the best player in this draft. If he is there, I would draft him and ride him all the way to the Hall of Fame. That said, I believe safety is the most underrated position in the draft each year. You rarely see that position taken in the top-15 and they can change the entire dynamic of a defense. Last year, I loved Antoine Winfield Jr. coming out and look at the difference he made in Tampa. The addition of Tyrann Mathieu to the Chiefs two years ago was similar to the Cowboys adding Charles Haley in the 90’s. If a quarterback is available at 10, you should have no problem finding a trade partner to gather picks. That would likely put you at the back end of the first round, and FINALLY, you get your safety, and hopefully your difference-maker on defense.
Kevin Gray - Would love for the Cowboys to draft a cornerback, preferably Patrick Surtain II to help address a passing defense that gave up 34 passing TD’s last season. This would provide new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn a foundation in the secondary he can build around with Surtain and Diggs, which would reunite the former Alabama teammates.
Dalton Miller - I would love to trade down and still be able to get one of those top 3 corners.
Matt Galatzan - The Cowboys have a chance to get a real difference-maker on either side of the ball with this pick, and I think, just like last season with CeeDee Lamb, you have to go with the best player available. So with the 10th pick, the Cowboys should take Kyle Pitts out of Florida. He would add yet another brand of explosiveness to the Cowboys offense, and give Dak Prescott yet another playmaker to get the ball to. It might not be the safe defensive pick, but it's one that would really put the offense over the top.
Josh Clark - I'll be terrified to see what this team's defense looks like next season if the Cowboys select Kyle Pitts or one of the receivers. I've always agreed that taking the best player available is the smart move, but the Cowboys have so many holes to fill on defense, and their offensive line is on the brink of a disaster with Collins and Smith's health statuses up in the air. If the best player available is a skill-position player, I think the Cowboys should do whatever they can to trade down and hope that one of the cornerbacks is still available (Surtain II, Farley, Horn).
