(SportsRadio 610) -- Astros catcher Martin Maldonado is on the bereavement-family medical leave list and the team has recalled Garrett Stubbs from the Triple A Sugar Land Skeeters.

Maldonado has to miss at least three games, but no more than seven while on the bereavement list, which is used when a player leaves the team to for a serious illness or death in the immediate family.

The veteran catcher posted to Twitter on Wednesday after his absence was officially announced, thanking fans for their support.

Maldonado, who is among the Astros' seven finalists in MLB All-Star balloting, went 2-for-3 in Houston's loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night. He leads American League catchers in throwing out runners attempting to steal bases, nailing 10 out of 23.
