New images of Astros pitcher Framber Valdez's fractured left ring finger reveal significant healing and surgery is not being recommended, which was an early concern.
The team announced Valdez met with Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles on Wednesday and will return to the Astros' spring training complex in West Palm Beach, Florida within the next few days to continue rehabbing his finger.
Valdez suffered the injury earlier this month in his first spring outing, when Francisco Lindor hit a comebacker off his finger.
There is no timetable for Valdez's return to pitching, according to the team.
Since the March 2 injury, the Astros signed another starter, Jake Odorizzi.
Astros manager Dusty Baker also announced Zack Greinke will take the mound on Opening Day against the Oakland Athletics.
The Astros' rotation to begin the season should consist of Greinke, Odorizzi, Lance McCullers Jr., Jose Urquidy and Cristian Javier.
