Astros insider says center fielder could be trade chip before deadline

(SportsRadio 610) - The Astros are crowded at center field.

With Jake Meyers' injury from last year's ALDS against the Chicago White Sox, the Astros have split time between Chas McCormick and Jose Siri at center field this season. But Meyers is expected to return from his torn labrum this later month, after rehabbing with Triple-A Sugar Land.

Houston has also since traded for Mauricio Dubon, who plays the infield and center. That's before you get to their talented mix of minor league outfielders: Pedro Leon and Corey Julks.

By the Aug. 2 trade deadline, this will have become positional redundancy and something will have to give.

MLB.com recently published a piece exploring one trade chip for each team. Astros insider Brian McTaggart had this note on McCormick as a possible trade chip for Houston.

"The return of center fielder Jake Meyers later this month clutters the Astros' outfield situation, which has Jose Siri and McCormick splitting time in center and a pair of Triple-A outfielders having some success. With budding stars Kyle Tucker and Yordan Alvarez entrenched in the outfield with Meyers, there are movable parts. That means McCormick and/or Siri could be pieces to be moved at the Trade Deadline. At Triple-A, Pedro Leon is producing runs while playing mostly center, and Corey Julks hit 10 homers in the month of May. There’s no place for all of them."

This season, McCormick is slashing .232/.291/.428 for a .719 OPS with six home runs in 42 games played (24 in center field; 18 in left; four in right). Siri is slashing .210/.278/343 for a .621 OPS and two home runs in 36 games (32 in center field).

In 49 games last season, Meyers slashed .260/.323/.438 for a .761 OPS with six home runs. He also considered the superior defensive option.
