HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- The Astros will determine Yordan Alvarez's status for the wild card round against the Detroit Tigers after taking part in a workout Monday at Minute Maid Park.

"He's about to go and start hitting right now in the cage," Astros manager Joe Espada said. "We also want him to go outside and run, so once I get to see those things It will give a little bit more (information."

Alvarez missed the final six games of the regular season after suffering a sprained right knee against the Los Angeles Angels on September 22. Alvarez remained in Houston during the team's road trip to Cleveland, and Espada told reporters that the swelling in his knee had dissipated on Sunday.

Named to his third consecutive American League All-Star team, Alvarez is the Astros team leader in batting average (.308), home runs (35), and RBI (86) this season, while playing in a career-high 147 games.

Chas McCormick also remained in Houston with Alvarez last weekend in order to continue rehabbing the hand he fractured on September 10. Espada said he expects McCormick to be "ready to go" when Tuesday's series begins.

McCormick compiled just a .577 OPS in 2024, but he did slash .391/.417/.435 in 24 September plate appearances.

Teams playing in the wild card round must submit their rosters to Major League Baseball by 10:00 am Tuesday.
