AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- No. 12 Westlake completely overwhelmed Akins on Thursday night, securing a decisive 70-0 victory at Chaparral Stadium in Westlake's 26-6A district opener.
The Chaparrals built a commanding 49-0 lead by halftime and never looked back. Head coach Tony Salazar was pleased with the opportunity to give younger players valuable playing time.
"Some of the younger guys came in and made some big plays," Salazar said. "It was a complete team effort and a testament to our hard work."
Westlake quarterback Rees Wise led the offensive charge, throwing two touchdown passes in the first quarter. Cal Livengood and Grady Bartlett were the primary beneficiaries, each hauling in a touchdown reception and also contributing rushing touchdowns. Elijah Clark added three rushing scores of his own, including a 15-yard scamper in the second quarter.
Sophomore Braden Riddell capped off the dominant performance with a 61-yard punt return touchdown in the third quarter.
Westlake (4-1, 1-0) will look to continue their winning ways when they face Austin High at House Park next Tuesday, while Akins (3-3, 0-2) will have a bye week.
