DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - One of the Cowboys' most polarizing players could be switching his uniform number to one of the franchise's former great's old number.

A notable NFL rule change affecting jersey numbers is 'likely to pass,' according to a report.

The league is said to be considering a proposal -- put forth by the Kansas City Chiefs -- that would loosen restrictions on jersey numbers, which are defined by position.

The motion is expected to pass, NFL insider Peter King reported, and would allow skill-position players including running backs, wide receivers and tight ends to wear single-digit numbers, among other changes.

As well, defensive backs and linebackers would be permitted to wear nos. 1-19, which would add a college feel to the NFL.

This new development has sparked Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith to share his excitement on Instagram about potentially changing his jersey number to his old college number at Notre Dame, No. 9.

That number, however, just so happens to be the same number former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo wore when he starred for America's Team.

Might Cowboys owner Jerry Jones allow one of his favorite current players, who also happens to be one of the most divisive players amongst the fan base, to wear the same number that one of his former favorites wore while carrying his franchise for years?

It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out when the ruling is made official.
