AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Fresh off a third consecutive 6A state title, Westlake High School won't be going far for its next head football coach, with defensive coordinator Tony Salazar set to take over the Chaparrals' program.

Eanes ISD Superintendent Dr. Tom Leonard made the announcement Tuesday morning, with a formal announcement held later at the Westlake campus.

"We have a next man up culture here at Westlake," said Salazar. "I'm the next man and it's an honor."

Salazar, who has been at Westlake since 2014 alongside current head coach Todd Dodge, has also coached at Mary Hardin-Baylor, as well as Dripping Springs, Leander, and Marble Falls, where Dodge hired Salazar.

He'll take over the reins from Dodge, who announced he would retire after the 2021 season.

Dodge is stepping back after a legendary career in Texas high school football and winning his seventh state title, including three with the Chaps and four with Southlake Carroll from 2002-2006.

In 2021, the Chaps posted a perfect 16-0 record, winning the 6A Division II title over Denton Guyer, with Dodge being named the National Football Coach of the Year by the National High School Coaches Association.

In their eight seasons together at Westlake, Dodge and Salazar led the Chaps to a 104-13 record.
