Bryan Broaddus on Cowboys defensive coordinator vacancy: "I know that Mike Zimmer would absolutely take this job"

The Dallas Cowboys need a defensive coordinator after Dan Quinn departed the organization for the Washington Commanders head coaching position Thursday morning, and a familiar name wants the job.

105.3 The Fan's Bryan Broaddus reported on the GBag Nation Thursday afternoon that former Cowboys defensive coordinator and Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer wants to throw his name in the hat.

"I would push hard for Mike Zimmer, myself. I think Mike makes players accountable. I think he makes his coaches accountable. I think he does have some flexibility with how he can call defenses. I love Mike's toughness. I think Mike McCarthy respects and knows Mike Zimmer from the days they battled in Minnesota and Green Bay. Mike Zimmer was one of those guys that came and spoke out [in support of] Mike McCarthy [when he] got fired in Green Bay," Broaddus said. ... "I know Mike Zimmer would absolutely take this job. I know that with 100 percent certainty."

Zimmer, 67, last coached in the NFL in 2021, his final season at the helm in Minnesota. He led Minnesota to a 72-56-1 record and made the playoffs three times, including one trip to the NFC Championship Game in his eight seasons.

Zimmer joined the Cowboys as an assistant on Barry Switzer's staff in 1994. He was the defensive backs coach from 1995-1999 before being named defensive coordinator, a position he held from 2000-2006.

Zimmer was the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator in 2007 and held the same position with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2008-2013 before getting the job in Minnesota.

Zimmer spent the past two seasons working with Deion Sanders at Jackson State and Colorado.
