Astros' Framber Valdez, Jake Odorizzi to pitch weekend rehab assignments in Sugar Land

These will be first rehab assignment starts by Astros players at Constellation Field in Skeeters' history as AAA affiliate

(SportsRadio 610) -- Astros pitchers Framber Valdez and Jake Odorizzi are scheduled to make their second rehab starts for the Class AAA Sugar Land Skeeters this weekend at Constellation Field.

Valdez, the left-hander recovering from a fractured left ring finger, will start for Sugar Land on Saturday, May 22. Odorizzi, the right-hander recovering from a right pronator muscle strain, will start Sunday, May 23.

Both of them pitched for Sugar Land on the road earlier in the week. This will be their first, and possibly only, appearances at Constellation Field, the site of the Astros' recently purchased Triple A squad.

In fact, these will be the first two rehab assignment starts by Astros players at Constellation Field in the Skeeters' history as the Triple A affiliate.

The Skeeters will also be giving away Jose Altuve Astros replica jerseys to the first 3,000 fans in attendance for Saturday's game.

Valdez made his first rehab assignment start for the Skeeters on Monday in Round Rock, throwing 47 pitches through three innings.

It was the first appearance for Valdez since sustaining a left index finger fracture in his first spring training outing. Valdez went 3-1 with a 1.88 ERA in the 2020 MLB postseason and was expected to be an innings eater for the Astros this season prior to his injury.

Odorizzi made his first rehab assignment start on Tuesday in Round Rock, throwing 57 pitches through three innings. He had not made an appearance since April 24 when sustaining the right pronator muscle strain.

Odorizzi signed a two-year contract with the Astros in March and made three starts before being placed on the 10-day IL this season.

Both first pitches are at 6:05 p.m.
