Jerry Jones: Cowboys 'made our trading deadline before the season started'

Whether the Cowboys had any potential moves on the radar earlier this week Jerry Jones won’t divulge. Clearly though, he is confident with the moves he made over the summer.

Dallas stood pat at the deadline, opting to roll with the group they currently have the rest of the season. It’s a good, if flawed, roster. When things click for the Cowboys, they boast one of the best defense in the NFL and an offense that can put up dozens of points.

But the defense has been decimated by injuries, and the offense has sputtered plenty, and in some areas lack depth beyond the top-end talent. Getting waxed by the 49ers earlier in the season suggested that while Dallas might be among the NFC’s best, they aren't among the conference’s elite. In other words, they could have made a move to bolster some area of the roster.

Jones delivered an interesting response when asked Friday in his weekly appearance on K&C Masterpiece if the Eagles’ collection of offensive weapons was on his mind when he built the roster over the offseason.

“Absolutely it was, and they’ve done additions as well,” Jones said. “But we really had our trading deadline, we made our trading deadline before the season started. That’s why we traded for Stephon Gilmore, that’s why we traded for Brandin Cooks. So, I know there’s been a lot of talk here lately about the trading deadline, but thank goodness we had the opportunity to get that trading deadline done back before we started the season.

“Consequently, right now, one week after the trade deadline, these guys have been working with quarterbacks, they’ve been working with scheme. They’re ready to go. Guys that were brought in last week, they’ve got a pretty nice little curve to get on the same page.”

Indeed, the Cowboys added impact players over the offseason – even if it has taken Cooks some time to get going. Jones wouldn’t share though if any moves were knocking on the door this week.

“I understand the reason for the question, but really if you look at it – anything that is talked about or is speculated about is dead as Napoleon," Jones said. "It didn’t happen, it just didn’t happen. So, it serves no purpose.

“First of all, it might be a negative in future conversations, so it serves no purpose. It doesn’t serve any purpose with our team, it doesn’t serve any purpose with future conversations with who you were talking to to talk about all these what-ifs. And that’s what they are until the metal hits the metal.”
