"Not until they can defeat Georgia": Brian Jones says Horns face key hurdle to SEC title

Texas and the SEC Landscape

Jones emphasized that Texas possesses the talent to reach the College Football Playoff but faces a significant hurdle in Georgia. He noted that the Longhorns cannot win the SEC without defeating the Bulldogs, a matchup he views as the ultimate test for the squad. Furthermore, he stressed that Texas must play better on the road to successfully navigate its rigorous conference schedule.

Turning to Texas A&M, Jones identified the offensive line as the program's biggest positional hurdle heading into the season. He stressed that Marcel Reed must step into a vocal leadership role and consistently perform as he did when rallying the team from a 31-0 deficit against South Carolina. Jones also pointed out that the Aggies' defense must improve its scoring allowance, noting that giving up point totals in the twenties will not suffice against elite SEC competition. Consequently, he predicted Texas A&M will fall short of securing a playoff spot this year.

Big Ten Contenders

Jones pointed to Oregon as the team to beat both in the Big Ten and in the playoffs. He praised the Ducks' deep roster, strong returning running backs, and formidable defensive line, officially selecting them to win the conference. Jones also commended Ohio State's grounded, team-first approach, predicting their running game will drive the offense. Additionally, he identified the Washington Huskies as a potential sleeper team to watch due to their electric playmakers. Furthermore, they highlighted the strategic and coincidental timing of CBS transitioning coverage from the SEC to the Big Ten, capitalizing on the realignment of power toward the conference.

SMU's ACC Transition and Playoff Picture

Addressing SMU's conference shift, Jones stated the Mustangs are capable of reaching the ACC Championship game if quarterback Kevin Jennings remains healthy. He highlighted SMU's strong portal acquisitions on defense and at the running back position, though he acknowledged the Miami Hurricanes as the heavily funded favorites to lead the ACC. Looking at the broader playoff picture, Jones predicted that Ole Miss will finish in the top ten, while Oklahoma will fall short.
