Rangers reach contract extension with manager Chris Woodward

The Rangers on Friday announced a contract extension for manager Chris Woodward.

The sides reached terms on a deal that will keep Woodward in Texas through 2023, with a club option for a 2024, the team announced on social media.

Woodward's original three-year contract was signed in November 2018 and included a one-year option for '22, which the team exercised last spring.

The new one-year extension and option essentially preclude a potential "lame-duck" situation, as Woodward enters what would have been the final year of the old deal.

The 44-year-old former journeyman infielder won 78 games in 2019, his first season on the bench, but the team slumped to 60 wins in 2021 amid a rebuild.

However, the Rangers have reportedly expressed interest in a number of top-tier free agents, with some baseball insiders indicating they're poised to up payroll after it was scaled down in recent seasons.

Upon retiring in 2012, Woodward coached with first the Mariners and later the Dodgers, where he was third-base coach, before joining the Rangers. During his playing career, he hit .239 with 33 career homers in parts of 12 seasons with the Blue Jays, Mets, Braves, Mariners and Red Sox. He had two tours with Seattle and Boston.
